Notion trick: Open link in new page or tab

For more than two decades, I’ve been using a desktop-based relational database system for all my project and workflow management. It was getting long in the tooth. I’ve tried other platforms, none of which did everything I needed — I even tried vibe coding my own — before eventually settling on Notion.

But Notion doesn’t do everything I want. Some of the problems are major, like its inability to create PDF invoices (I vibe-coded a tool for this).

Some are minor.

One of the most minor — and most annoying ones — is that you can’t automatically have pages open as new tabs. External links open in new tabs, but not links to other pages within your Notion workspace.

I know, I know, you can just Ctrl-click on a link. Or right-click and select “open in new tab.” But that extra little fraction of a second wasted annoys me.

I couldn’t find the answer to this problem, no matter how much Googling I did, or how many AI chatbots I asked.

If there’s another solution out there that I missed, please let me know in the comments!

Anyway, here’s my hack:

  • Add “https://google.com@” to the front of the Notion URL.

That’s it.

Here’s an example:

https://www.notion.so/blahblahblah-12345678

Becomes:

https://google.com@notion.so/blahblahblah-12345678

Everything before the “@” sign is ignored by the browser, but Notion still sees it as an external link.
